Free Event: August Bank Holiday Morning Meditation
August 26, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 9:30 am UTC+0Free
What is the August Bank Holiday Morning Meditation?
As part of the brand-new Newhaven Festival in Sussex, Alistair is hosting a number of free activities, including a August Bank Holiday Morning Meditation. It’s a reprise of his popular “Sit the Downs” practice on the chalky hills of his home town.
Why “Sit the Downs”?
The chalk-hills of the South Downs stretch from Winchester in the West to Eastbourne in the East. And since he grew up, Alistair has realised that like all English landscape, they have a unique quality that we can tap in through somatic meditation. Unlike the granites of the North and West and the sandstone and ironstones of the Midlands, South Eastern chalk lands have a porous and spacious quality. The poet W.H. Auden waxed lyrical about them:
“When I try to imagine a faultless love/ Or the life to come, what I hear is the murmur/ Of underground streams, what I see is a limestone landscape.” (In Praise of Limestone)
Where and when and what?
Early on the morning of the Bank Holiday Sunday in August (27th August) Alistair will be meeting up at the roundel by Newhaven Fort to intrigue the basic practice of Sitting-Up Earth Descent. Then we’ll settle up on the chalky, grasslands of the cliffs above Newhaven West Beach and sit for 30 minutes. Followed by some iced tea and a discussion of the practice.
We start at 8am and will be finished by 9.30 – there’s a chance of breakfast down at the Marina afterwards if you fancy it.
