A weekly somatic meditation class in Brighton
Alistair Appleton is back in Brighton this Winter, leading a 6 week introduction (or refresher) in the ground practices of somatic meditation.
This weekly somatic meditation class in Brighton will be on Thursday evenings from 7pm till 9pm for six weeks. It’s open to practitioners of all levels. Beginners are welcome. As are meditators who are intrigued by somatic meditation and would like to explore it.
Somatic Meditation can revolutionise our practice.
‘Somatic meditation is a specific method of meditation based on the teaching of the American Dharma teacher, Reggie Ray. He and a whole swathe of like-minded practitioners found that the traditional forms of meditation could easily become ‘heady’. Although we are working with our thoughts, we end up using thinking to control or understand what is going on. Which causes more thinking!
Alistair has studied with Reggie, for more than 6 years. Somatic practice begins with the direct experience of the “soma” (the felt sense of the body) rather than the “psyche” of thinking and keeps on exploring from there.
Alistair draws on contemporary neuroscience around the nervous system. Especially the work of Stephen Porges. This gives us some tools of really knowing how the body stays tense. And how we can really relax it.
When we truely relax, our thoughts start to vanish
With a relaxed body, we can then start to notice how the thinking mind is driven by the energy of the body. When we relax, our thoughts start to vanish. When we think less, we stress less.
Over the course of the six weeks we will be looking at these practices:
- Polyvagal Tuning
- Earth Descent
- Three Levels of Breath
- Lower Belly Breathing
- Diagnostic Breathing
- Central Channel
What you can expect on a Mindsprings course
Mindsprings courses follow a general pattern over the weeks.
- we begin with some bodywork, relaxing the body and coming into our soma.
- then there is some group practice – sharing our experience and stumbling blocks with the practice
- each week, Alistair teaches a new practice that we run through a couple of times
- there is space to ‘troubleshoot’ anything that arises as we try this practice out
- Alistair may offer some ‘framework’ to understand the deeper implications of each practice
- we commit to practicing the week’s practice every day for the coming week, about 30 minutes a day
Suitable for complete beginners
This weekly somatic meditation class in Brighton is a wonderful chance for you to have a deep and lasting introduction to the practices of somatic meditation. Compete beginners are most welcome as are longer-term meditators who would like to explore this fresh approach. If you have any question about the course then please do write to firstname.lastname@example.org.
How to book and financial support
Mindsprings tries to offer good quality instruction at a reasonable cost. We offer a concessionary rate to anyone who is struggling financially, to students and to the unemployed. We never want to turn someone away because they can’t pay. However, the full-price tickets help subsidise these cheaper places, so we ask people to use their discernment when buying a concession.
